Ship Buster Missiles Sink Old US Warship in Live Fire Training Off Scotland

Carried out at the UK Ministry of Defence's Hebrides Range in the North Atlantic, the multi-domain exercise brought together surface, subsurface, and air assets to test cutting-edge anti-ship munitions.

Over the course of the engagement, the 4,100-ton target hull was systematically dismantled using a sequence of advanced weapon systems:

• Standard Missile-6 (SM-6): Deployed from the U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Paul Ignatius, demonstrating long-range anti-surface strike precision.

• Naval Strike Missiles (NSM): The Royal Navy's Type 23 frigate HMS Portland successfully executed its first operational launch of the ship-busting missile against a target of this scale.

• Sea Venom Missiles: Fired from an embarked Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter, marking a successful end-to-end test of spotting, targeting, and striking a maritime asset from the air.

• Mark 48 Torpedo: The final decisive blow was delivered by a heavyweight torpedo launched from a U.S. attack submarine, sending the historic hull down to a depth of roughly 6,000 feet.

Sending a Clear Strategic Message

Military commanders from both nations hailed the operation as an absolute operational triumph.

Originally built and commissioned in 1983, the Klakring served over three decades before its decommissioning in 2013. Ahead of the exercise, the vessel underwent extensive environmental cleaning to strip all hazardous materials, ensuring the remaining hulk can safely function as an artificial marine reef.

Leadership noted that the exercise was designed to validate modern interoperability and give commanders total confidence in cross-domain strike capabilities.

"This sinking exercise not only validated the power behind U.S.-UK offensive weapons but delivers a clear message to adversaries that the U.S. Navy and Royal Navy remain a ready allied force," stated Commander Kelechi Ndukwe of U.S. Task Force 65.
